As your bump grows, your body changes week by week. Some people like a little extra support for long days on their feet; others want a smooth layer under clothes. There's no single right choice. It depends on how you feel and how you spend your day.
The three main styles
1. Seamless belly bands
A soft, stretchy tube that sits over your bump. Belly bands are about light coverage and a close, comfortable fit rather than structured support. They're simple to pull on and easy to layer under everyday clothes.
2. Under-bump support bands
A band that sits beneath your bump and wraps around your lower back. Many are one piece and low-profile, which some people prefer for wearing under clothing.
3. Full-support belts with shoulder straps
These combine an under-bump band with shoulder straps and a back panel, so support is spread across your shoulders, back and belly. They tend to be more structured and are usually worn over a fitted top.
How to measure
- Use a soft tape measure and keep it level and snug, not tight.
- For most under-bump styles, measure around your lower belly and lower back, passing beneath your bump.
- Some size charts also use an upper-abdomen measurement. Measure around the fullest part of your bump if asked.
- Compare your measurements with the size chart for the specific product, as sizing varies between styles and brands.
Getting a comfortable fit
- Support should feel supportive, never restrictive. If you feel pinching, numbness or discomfort, loosen or remove it.
- Adjustable closures and straps let you fine-tune the fit as your bump changes.
- Start with shorter periods of wear and see how you feel.
When to check with your provider
Support garments are comfort accessories, not medical treatment. If you have pain, a pregnancy complication or any questions about whether a support product is right for you, talk to your doctor or midwife first.
